read a session as a terminal, a split, or a conversation
Tired of reading your agent's work as terminal output? One pill switches the window between the terminal, the conversation beside it, and the conversation filling the shard. Nothing restarts.
An agent session is two things at once. It is a shell with a process in it. It is also a conversation you are having with an agent. A terminal only ever shows you the first one. So the conversation reaches you wrapped in spinners, redraws and box-drawing characters, and the part you wanted scrolls past at the speed the agent writes.
crystl gives the window three ways to show the same session. They sit in the shard bar as a three-segment pill: terminal, split, and chat. Terminal is the default, unchanged. Split puts the conversation in a dock beside the terminal. That is the view that shows you the two are one session. Chat hands the whole shard area to the conversation, at the same size as your terminal text, because it is standing where the terminal stood.
Wide windows get long lines, and that is the cost of giving chat the full width. The measure was capped at 720 points, then 900, then three quarters of the window. Every one of them read as a narrow strip. So the caps are gone.
The mode belongs to the window, not to one shard. Set it once and every shard you click honors it. You never have to work out which mode this tab is in. Cmd + Y flips between the terminal and whichever chat mode you used last. Live in fullscreen and fullscreen is what comes back; live in the dock and you get the dock. The mode survives a restart.
What makes this safe is that chat mode unmounts the terminal's view and nothing else. The pty, the terminal engine and the cell store stay live and keep eating every byte. crystl screen and crystl watch go on answering from the real grid, at the size the window is now. That holds the whole time you are in chat. Flip back and you mount a view onto state that never paused. Nothing is rebuilt and no scrollback is lost.
Why it matters
one pill, three states
terminal | split | chat sits in the shard bar's right band, every label visible and the active one lit. It reads as state rather than as a button you have to guess the result of.
chat reads like the terminal it replaced
Fullscreen chat takes the whole shard area and sets the conversation at your terminal's font size, so flipping modes doesn't resize the text under you. An empty facet strip gives its space back.
the terminal never stops running
Chat mode hides a view, not a process. The engine keeps processing output into the cell store, so crystl screen and crystl watch answer from the live grid and a sibling agent reads the same session you are reading.
peek at the terminal without leaving
A quiet control in the chat header shows this shard's terminal for as long as you want it. The window stays in chat mode, and the peek ends when you switch shards.
it tells you when the grid matters
A TUI dialog the conversation can't render gets a banner that says so, with show it as its action. crystl offers the terminal; it never flips your window for you.
honest about what it can't read
An agent that keeps its conversation somewhere crystl can't read shows you split instead, naming the agent and where its conversation lives. The mode is your intent; a shard answers for itself.

Gems & Shards
Gems, shards, and the crystal rail keep every project one click away.
Floating Cards
See what every agent needs from you, the moment it needs it.
Agent Activity Panel
One live view of every agent across all your gems: who's working, who's idle, and where tokens are going.
Schedule Agents
Launch a fresh agent at a set time (once, daily, or weekdays). Pick the gem, agent, model, and prompt; crystl fires it on schedule.
Automation (Sequences)
Automate the work you keep doing by hand. Write the job down once and let a schedule, a file landing, or a watched URL run it for you.
Parallel Sessions
Run multiple Claude instances on the same repo in separate git worktrees.
Hero Shards
Summon a single hero as a shard (its own agent, model, and persona) without a quest party.
History Navigator
Browse, jump through, and search every session: conversation and tool calls.
Token Tracking
Track token burn per shard, estimate turns left, and reclaim context window by disabling heavy plugins and skills.
Workbench
A slide-out task list in every project, backed by a WORKBENCH.md the agent reads and writes with you.
Markdown Editor
Render and edit any .md in a side panel. Toggle it from the workbench, and let agents open docs for you from the CLI.
Prompt Integration
Facet Inserts give you one-click access to saved prompts, commands, and shortcuts.
Agent File Editor
Create, edit, and manage CLAUDE.md, rules, skills, and agent config files with a block editor, file chooser, and project optimizer.
Project Optimizer
Scan your project for gaps in agent configuration (missing files, incomplete docs, oversized code, and setup issues) with one-click fixes.
Skills Library
Browse and import agentic skills that teach agents like Claude Code or Codex new tricks: code review, testing, deployment, and more.
cavrn terminal
The terminal as structured data: every turn, tool call, result, and table captured as agent-readable metadata. Drawn fast on the GPU with Metal.
Remote Development
Full crystl integration over SSH: approval cards, file relay, and click-to-open on remote machines.
Open Models
Run open models locally or hosted, orchestrate them with frontier agents, and cut token costs.
Agent Orchestration
One agent spawns, supervises, and merges the work of many: a control room for a team of coding agents.
crystl quest
Assemble a party of specialized agents. Each brings unique skills, coordinates in shared chat, and executes in parallel.
Screenshot Bar
Drag recent screenshots into the terminal. Spotlight-powered, always up to date.
Copy Bar
