CLI command tiers

Updated October 1, 2026

Every crystl command is either free on every tier or needs a Guild membership. This page is the full list, generated from the same catalog the app itself enforces, so it cannot drift from what your copy of crystl actually allows.

The rule

Two sentences cover almost all of it:

  1. Every read is free. Listing gems and shards, reading a shard’s screen, reading history, checking what is pending, waiting on an event, searching, scanning for keys, scoring a project: free on every tier, always.
  2. Changing something needs Guild. Opening a gem, creating or closing a shard, typing into another shard, approving a tool call, merging a branch, starting a quest.

Four deliberate exceptions sit on top of that:

  • Showing you something is free, whatever it costs the app. A command whose whole job is to surface something you already own does not change anything, so it is never gated: crystl copy, crystl card, crystl markdown show, crystl history show, crystl sequence open, and the workbench panel controls (workbench open, close, toggle).
  • Telling us about a bug is free. crystl report bug, idea, and praise.
  • Describing your own machine is free. crystl agent profile set and crystl endpoint set / remove record which agents and model providers you already pay for. That is local configuration, not control, and gating it would leave a free account’s agents pointed at the wrong model with no way to say otherwise.
  • Scheduling is capped, not gated. crystl schedule add and crystl schedule cancel are free up to 3 schedules, counted across your whole machine. Disabling one does not free a slot, and a rotating schedule counts as one however many prompts it holds. Past the cap, schedule add answers 403 limit_reached rather than guild_required, and Guild lifts the cap.

A Guild command on a free account answers 403 guild_required. Nothing breaks and nothing is lost: the table below says what to do instead for each one, and that is the same wording crystl writes into your agent’s instructions, so an agent on a free account reaches for the alternative rather than the command that will refuse it.

What an agent is told

crystl writes the tier rules into your agent’s instructions in two places, because a file you commit cannot know who will open it:

  • Your project’s CLAUDE.md / AGENTS.md gets the tier-neutral version. It marks each Guild command and pairs it with the free alternative, which stays true for anyone on the team whatever tier they are on.
  • Your machine’s global instruction file (~/.claude/CLAUDE.md, ~/.codex/AGENTS.md) gets the version that knows your licence. On a free account it describes the capability in plain English, says it needs Guild, and gives the free alternative as the instruction, without naming the command that would refuse. It is rewritten when crystl launches and whenever your licence changes, and crystl uninstall takes it out again.

A shard also carries its tier in CRYSTL_TIER, so an agent can plan around it instead of calling a command to find out.
